Ghost Pepper Hunting: Louisiana-Made Hot Sauces

Louisiana Hot Sauce

Louisiana is known for many things—Creole culture, Jazz music, Mardi Gras—but hot sauce definitely belongs on the list. All across America, Louisiana hot sauce is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to zesty, spicy, smoky goodness.

Ask a bunch of folks from Louisiana what the best local hot sauce is, and you'll get a bunch of different answers. Our real estate agents are here to weigh in on the matter and suggest you go on a ghost pepper hunt this October. These are some of our favorite hot sauces that could only come from Louisiana!

  • Crystal Hot Sauce
Made in New Orleans since 1923, Crystal Hot Sauce (or, more properly, "Louisiana's Pure Crystal Hot Sauce") has been Louisiana's premier hot sauce for close to a century. With a flavor profile that puts the hot peppers front and center, Crystal Hot Sauce packs a punch but is never overwhelming. It's great for splashing on eggs or adding some kick to a bloody Mary. Crystal also makes several variations on their classic recipe, including an "Extra Hot" version for those who demand a little more heat.

  • D.a.T. Sauce
A family-owned hot sauce company based in Morgan City, Louisiana, D.a.T. Sauce is a twist on classic hot sauce, made from a secret family recipe. It's the kind of sauce you can put on just about anything. And while D.a.T. Sauce certainly has some heat to it, it's not blow-the-doors-off hot. It's more about flavor, with a balance of garlic, onion, and tomato along with a generous dose of red pepper.

  • Slap Ya Mama Cajun Pepper Sauce
Famous for its cheeky name, Slap Ya Mama Cajun Pepper Sauce is an all-around solid hot sauce that offers a balance of peppery punch and salty, savory goodness. A few drops of it adds a little heat to a slice of pizza or a plate of eggs and home fries. Slap Ya Mama also makes a killer Cajun seasoning blend, as well as some tasty Jalapeno hot pepper sauce.

  • Tabasco Pepper Sauce
The Tabasco Brand is arguably the most famous Louisiana hot sauce, the one that's spread far beyond state lines to become ubiquitous pretty much everywhere. There's a good reason for that. Tabasco sauce is perfect in its simplicity, with just the right level of heat. They make about a dozen varieties at this point, but the Original Tabasco Red Pepper Sauce is still king. It's also still made right here in Louisiana using red pepper, vinegar, salt... and that's it.

  • Cajun Power Spicy Garlic Sauce
Cajun Power's original Garlic Sauce doesn't have much spice at all (but it's great on barbecued shrimp). But thanks to popular demand, the folks at Cajun Power introduced a version with more kick. Their Spicy Garlic Sauce adds some satisfying red pepper heat to the traditional garlic-centric flavor profile, and the result is a spicy sauce that's great for marinating, grilling, or dipping. It's also perfect for chicken wings with a punchy Cajun twist.
