What to Expect
The Festival of Lights is a little different every year, but each occurrence marks the official start of the holiday season in Baton Rouge. There's always a good time to be had! Here's what you can look forward to:
- Tree Lighting and Fireworks - Mayor Broome will begin counting down to the lighting of the Baton Rouge Christmas Tree at 6:20 pm! Every year, the lighting of the 25-foot tree with 250,000 sparkling lights is a true highlight of the evening. The tree lighting will be followed by a spectacular fireworks display over the Mississippi River, so be sure to pick a spot with a view!
- Santa Makes an Appearance - None other than Santa Claus himself will assist Mayor Broome with the lighting of the Christmas tree. Afterward, guests will be invited to take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Old State Capitol from 6:30 to 8:30, followed by a Christmas film in the old House Chamber.
- Snow Village and Ice Skating - Yes, you read that right! Ice skating in Baton Rouge! 10 tons of real snow will be brought to Repentance Park (located between the Old State Capitol and River Center), where kids aged 5 to 15 will be able to go snow tubing starting at 5 pm. An ice skating rink will be located on the first floor of the River Center Plaza and will be open to kids 5 to 10 years old, starting at 4 pm.
- Artist Village - The Festival of Lights also brings an opportunity to do a little shopping! Numerous local vendors will be on hand at the Artist Village with a wide variety of arts, crafts, and handmade goods of all kinds.
